Upon site creation, your website will be assigned a temporary subdomain. You can publish your site and use the temporary subdomain to reach your live site.
A domain name is an address used to visit a website (i.e. potterystudio.com). It is a custom name that you can use to mask your temporary subdomain. You can have as many domain names mapped to your site as you wish.
How to get a custom domain name
You will need to click on the Main menu (3 lines at the top left corner) to open the following side panel. Then choose the Domains tab.
Use the search bar to find the domain name you will be using with your site. Be careful when typing and make sure you don't make any mistakes since once you have acquired your domain name, you cannot change it.
The most common domain name extension is .com, but you can choose any other if it's available.
Finally, you will need to register the domain name. Fill in the form to finalize the domain name registry. All domain names are registered for a year. After the year is over, if your account is still active, the domain name will be renewed automatically.
When the domain registration has been completed, you will receive an e-mail notification. The domain name will be automatically mapped to your site. Just publish the site and it will be reachable through your new custom domain name.
Map a domain name from somewhere else
First of all, you will need to go to a domain name provider and buy a domain name from them (i.e. eNom, Godaddy, 123reg, etc).
After buying the domain name, they will give you access to edit its settings.
Every domain name provider may have different naming conventions, but you will need to search for something called DNS settings / Host records / DNS records, or similar.
Here you will now need to add 2 DNS records.
If you want to point the WWW subdomain to your website (i.e. www.mydomain.com), add a CNAME record, set the host to ‘www’, and point to the correct address. This address can be found by going to Site settings > Domain mapping > Map a domain.
If you want to point the naked domain to your website (i.e. mydomain.com), add an A record, set the host to ‘@’, and point to the correct address. This address can be found by going to Site settings > Domain mapping > Map a domain.
Once the records are in place, visit your Settings in the site builder.
Select the 'Domain mapping' tab, and then click on the 'Map a domain' button.
- Type the domain name into the Domain to map field
- Click on Test mapping
- Click on Map domain
